Central Citrus Community Center Celebrates Citizen’s Milestone Birthday

For Dolores Lenkowski, a regular at the community center, it was a day to celebrate two things: the “luck of the Irish” and her milestone 99th birthday.

“Today I’m really surprised. I never imagined I’d be ninety-nine,” said Dolores. She says that despite being born on St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas is her favorite holiday. “I’m German,” Lenkowski adds.

Dolores is very active at Central Citrus Community Center, playing Mexican Train Dominos and Rummikub. She loves to make crafts for family and friends, and loves music, too. “Dolores has been coming for many years and she is a vital part of the community. She is a joy to be around. We’re so proud she’s ninety-nine,” says Community Center Coordinator Kriss Hornaday.

The community centers in Citrus County provide meeting places throughout the county for residents of all ages. These centers offer people a place to go for nutritious meals, social activities, and an array of programs such as health screenings, health and consumer education, creative arts, computer classes, dancing, exercises, and more.

“On average, we serve about forty seniors every Monday through Friday,” says Hornaday. “They come for lunch, play games, and keep active. Today we did Tai Chi.”
