Citrus County Housing Services was awarded 10 new vouchers from Housing & Urban Developments Office of Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) on December 20, 2020. 

Citrus County Housing Services Awarded Vouchers to House Veterans

In just five years, Housing Services has been awarded 62 vouchers, housing over 50 veterans at risk of homelessness while providing them with clinical services and case management in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Tampa. 

In September, Housing Services HUD-VASH program was recognized nationally as a “Best Practice” as the only county in the nation to allow veterans to lease-up in Independent Living Facilities so they can continue to live independently with a support system in place.  To date, Housing Services has presented their Best Practice to the national HUD-VASH Office in Washington DC and Public Housing Authorities in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Florida.

HUD awarded $46 million in rental assistance and housing vouchers this year to help veterans at risk of experiencing homelessness nationwide. The supportive housing assistance provided through HUD-VASH will support approximately 5,000 new vouchers. These vouchers are administered in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs, and enables veterans and their families who are at risk of homelessness to access affordable housing with an array of supportive services.

Veterans participating in the HUD-VASH program rent privately owned housing and generally contribute no more than 30 percent of their income toward rent.  Currently, Citrus County’s HUD-VASH Voucher Program has provided a total of $310,000 annually to house homeless veterans and their families residing in Citrus County.
