Museum Presents Kids’ Corner & Crafternoons in August: Free Scavenger Hunt and Craft Events

On Saturday, August 6, 2022, back by popular demand, the museum will host another free kids’ scavenger hunt. Family teams will need at least one member with a smart phone who can utilize a special app with clues to complete tasks and move on in the scavenger hunt. Households that finish will receive a trophy. Parents should be prepared to choose from one of three sessions which will begin at 10 am, 12 pm and 2 pm.

On Saturday, August 20, 2022, from 1:00-3:00 pm, the museum will host a Kids’ Corner & Crafternoons event focused on crafting with cameras. Children will learn how to create a pinhole camera that actually works out of cardboard and take the cameras home with them. This program is planned to coincide with the museum’s upcoming exhibit from photographer Clyde Butcher entitled, “America the Beautiful.” The famed photographer’s works consist of breathtaking landscape photos from across the United States that both photography fans and naturalists will enjoy.

Parents and guardians should pre-register for these events by calling the museum at (352) 341-6428. Children must be supervised by their accompanying adults during the entirety of each of these programs.

Families who visit may want to plan for extra time to see the permanent exhibits on local prehistory and pioneer history. The entire museum and historic courtroom are open for other visitors who should expect to watch for extra foot traffic on Saturdays. The historic courtroom is the site of county business and the location of the filming of the final scenes in Elvis’s 1961 film, “Follow That Dream.” A museum volunteer recently arranged the courtroom scene from the movie for visitors to see complete with props and photos, which will remain on display long term. The gift shop offers a wide array of Elvis souvenirs and interesting books ranging from children’s genres, historical fiction, and local history. In addition to taking in what the museum has to offer, visitors will also be able to enjoy a farmer’s market on the first and third Saturdays in Downtown Inverness at The Depot.
