Untold Stories

There are countless African Americans whose lives and achievements have contributed to our nation’s history as well as our culture in America. Black history and Black creatives are important and essential to society as a whole and to the narrative we write personally as individuals and as a community. We invite you to submit 1-3 pieces of artwork for the show “Untold Stories”which explores the moments, events, and people that are too often overlooked and under told. We all have a part to play in creating a more equitable community. This show was created with the means to honor Black History Month in a more significant way by sharing these stories in Brooksville and beyond.

Florida Native

Anything Florida will be well suited for this exhibit. Just make it native. What is a Florida native? Artwork ideas can be anything from native plants, animal species, and specific peoples to more creative submissions like paintings that serve as tributes to the Native land we live on. You may have a criteria that differs from the described and you can iterate on what it means to be a Floridian in the modern age, living in the present while remembering our past and walking into the future.

“I”

An exhibit about self portraits? Sure! Also, this is all about perception. How one would view themselves or be perceived from the outside. Don’t be shy and let your inner and outer beauty show. Be bold, you’ve earned those “grays”. You may want to team up with another artist or one of our many poets in Brooksville. Some are in hiding and should feel open to writing poetry and displaying alongside an artist they team up with. For example, poetry can evoke spontaneity and inspire visual artists to create beyond their own imaginations. These pieces are full of content and concepts which can channel creative responses. Poets and artists, please create your displays relative to each other’s artwork. For example, each piece can stand alone while also being perceived as one art piece. A challenge! Have fun with it!

Meeting of the Minds

As we move into yet another new year, we recognize that significant cultural communication means reaching out to our neighbors, listening to one another, and working together to create unique, new experiences and works of art! This show is about collaboration. It mixes media, people, and ideas. We invite artists to submit 1-3 pieces to this show that focuses on creative collaboration. Draw inspiration from something or somewhere new. Work on a piece with your art teacher or friend who works in another medium.

Call an artist whose work fits well with yours from the next town over and see if you could make individual pieces that complement each other. Coordinate with other creatives to create artwork that speaks to the importance of discussing your art and what it means to you, working together, and exposing yourself to different themes and mediums. This final show of the year, Meeting of the Minds, asks you to pay tribute to the undeniable talent and culture of the arts throughout Central Florida.
