We are looking at some classic nearshore fishing coming this March on the Big Bend. The waters around 6- to 10-feet with scattered structures can have more species of fish than a Sea World aquarium.

There are pelagic species like Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, and homebodies like big sea trout.

The easiest way to target all of these species is with a soft plastic lure and 1/8 oz. jighead. Lure color makes a difference and, in my tackle box, these colors are always there: glow, watermelon red flake, new penny, and electric chicken.

Moving water is always best, so set up a drift near some rocks or broken bottom, and cast ahead of the vessel working the lure in an up-and-down jigging motion. 

The rocks that you may find while drifting can be targeted with live shrimp on the same jighead and look for some new species to catch. Grunts, sea bass, sheepshead, mangrove snapper, and small gag grouper.

If you have a young person or someone new to fishing this is the best way to introduce them to a wonderful sport.

High incoming tide will be early morning or late evening this weekend.
