Just a few days before the opening of the Big Bend scallop season and I’ve still had mixed reports of how the scallop population is doing on the south end. Only thing I could suggest is don’t “home stead”, move and cover ground. Maybe start shallow near Gomez Rocks in Crystal River then work west and in Homosassa start close to St. Martins Keys then work west.

Something new that has happened in Citrus Country since last year is that there is a ramp fee at most of our big boat ramps. The company, Premium Parking, is over all the ramps and the daily pass for non-county residents is $10.00.

The ramp at MacRae’s in Homosassa is location P2930. You can call 844 236 2011 or text P2930 to 504504. Being paid up before you get to the ramp could save you and others time at the ramp. It’s enforced 24/7 and uses your trailer tag when you register, not your vehicle.

Fishing has been slow to medium on a day-to-day basis.

Trout have been in about 3 to 6 feet of water over rock grass bottom. Popping corks are working best with a dark colored jig.

Redfishing is best on the last hour of the incoming tide. Live shrimp or pinfish is the best bait on rocky points on the inside edges of the keys that meet the Gulf. For fun action move out to the rocks and use live shrimp for mangrove snapper, grunts and flounder. If it’s too hot, then dive in and use a pole spear to get the same fish to compliment your scallop dinner.

High incoming tide will be in the afternoon this weekend.
