Darkened waters from last week’s rain event have made it a little harder to see the scallops and dropped our water temperatures about 5 degrees.

On a recent scallop trip we were out west of the St. Martins Keys with limited success, but I believe heading out deeper would have given better results. I’ve heard that further south of Homosassa is better scalloping grounds, but with the water draining out of the Chassahowitzka swamp the clarity is not good. 

Upcoming tides this weekend will be low during the middle part of the day and if we have sunny conditions it could be a banner day for scallops as long as we have no more rain. 

Trout fishing south of the river early in the day has been good on the outgoing tide. Use watermelon red flake MirrOlure provokers with a 1/8 oz jighead. Look for moving water running across bars on the south side of the river channels, and fish the down current side.

Redfishing has picked up a little but I have not found any school fish yet. Jumping mullet is the key to finding them. 

On the rocks around the 10-foot range, look for some good mangrove snapper fishing. Free-lined live shrimp is the best bait. I like to drift past the rock to see if there are a few fish swimming around it before I start fishing.

High incoming tide will be early morning and late evening this weekend.
