Due to the negative impacts they pose to Florida’s ecosystem, red-eared sliders are regulated in Florida as a Conditional species in Chapter 68-5, F.A.C. and require a permit for personal possession along with specific enclosure requirements.

The Exotic Pet Amnesty Program is recruiting new adopters willing to give these sliders a forever home!

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Exotic Pet Amnesty Program strives to prevent the release of nonnative fish and wildlife by helping pet owners rehome their animals when they can no longer provide care. One of the most common species surrendered to the program is red-eared sliders.

To become an approved adopter and help prevent the release of these nonnative pets, apply for the permit. After you receive your permit for red-eared slider possession, send your adopter application via email to the FWC’s Exotic Pet Amnesty team at PetAmnesty@MyFWC.com.
