The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) sidewalk project on Pleasant Grove Road in Inverness is now complete. This project was funded by a SRTS grant through the Hernando/Citrus Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), which the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners and the Citrus County School Board worked together to apply for in the 2015-2016 year.

“Safe Routes to School” Sidewalk Project Completed

The project’s goal was to build a sidewalk to connect Pleasant Grove Elementary School to the Lakes Region Library, Withlacoochee Technical College, and businesses along SR44, and to the neighborhoods along the route. The project construction was federally funded for $534,000 and managed and implemented by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

SRTS’s mission is to increase the number of children who walk or bicycle to school by funding projects that remove the barriers currently preventing them from doing so. Those barriers include lack of infrastructure, unsafe infrastructure and a lack of programs that promote walking and bicycling through education/encouragement programs aimed at children, parents, and the community.
