Citrus County UF/IFAS Extension Service recently participated in the statewide 2021 Peanut Butter Challenge to collect jars of peanut butter for local families in need.

UF/IFAS Extension Peanut Butter Challenge Collects 200 Jars

More than 200 jars of healthy, nutritionally dense, and shelf stable peanut butter was collected.

This competition was conceived to help feed hungry families ahead of the holidays, in addition to promoting a Florida-grown crop. The peanut, which is produced mainly throughout the northern regions of the state, contributes over $150 million to the state’s economy. Peanut butter is an ever-popular item in food pantries for its nutrient density and shelf stability

When the challenge ended on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, a total of 206 jars (weighing more than 250 pounds) of peanut butter were donated to a local food bank that sends food home with school children to share with their families.

Without strong community support, the challenge would not have had such amazing success. The staff at the UF/IFAS Extension Citrus County want to thank all those involved in helping the community.
