June 1st 10:00 AM       Damsels and Dragons: Join UF/IFAS at Chinsegut for a fun look at damsel and dragon flies. Lifecycles and development will be discussed and some live and preserved specimens may be displayed. This program is open to all ages and free to attend. No registration required. Program runs 1.5 hours

June 1st 8:30 PM         Night Hike: This night hike focuses on the elusive southern flying squirrel. Hike is best for ages 10+ as we will have to use non-visual senses and specialized equipment to detect squirrels in the dark. Program begins with equipment training before heading into the field. Registration is required by calling (352) 754-6722. Limited to 12 participants. Program runs approximately 2 hours

June 2nd 10:00 AM   Tree Rings: A look at dendrochronology or tree ring dating. Trees can provide critical information on environmental conditions if you know what to look for. Join us for a fun informal program on analyzing rings and dating trees. No registration required. Best suited for ages 10+. Program runs 1.5 hours

June 13th 8:00 AM    National Archery in Schools BAI Certification Class: If you teach physical education or run programs for an organized Co-op, scouting organization or other organized group this is an opportunity to become certified as a Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) through the largest standardized archery program offered for school aged children. Instructors certified at Chinsegut will have access to use of the center’s NASP equipment for programs for their group (additional requirements apply). The cost is $60.00 per person (ages 18+ only). Register by June 1st at NASPBAI.org Class runs 8 hours

June 15th 9:00-2:00     Nature Photography Day: Celebrate National Photography Day with this fun filled event, open to all participants. Complete a photo scavenger hunt for a chance to win a prize. Stop in to the Center for scavenger hunt lists and information on Florida Nature Trackers. To participate see event details at Creative-Nature-Photography.com. This event is run by Green-Fly Media.

June 16th 10:00 AM    Bug Hotel: Making space for wildlife can be a fun for all ages. Learn how to recycle materials, where to get free materials and how to put those recycled things to use creating living space for crawly critters. Class includes a live demonstration with audience participation of bug house creating and information on Florida Backyards program to get backyard wildlife identified. Open to all ages, no registration required. Program runs 1.5 hours

June 16th 2:00 PM       Children in the WILD; Butterflies: Ages 5-9 are invited to join us at Chinsegut to learn about butterflies. Program includes games, crafts or other activities. Register to attend at (352) 754-6722 or online at MyFWC.com/Chinsegut Program runs 1 hour

June 22nd 10:00 AM    Insect ID and Mounting: This class co-hosted by UF/IFAS insect enthusiast Dr. William Lester will give participants a firsthand look at how specimens are preserved for reference and study. Includes demonstration of mounting equipment and techniques for the collecting enthusiast. No registration required. Program runs 2 hours

June 22nd 6:00 PM      Wild Foraging: Park Services Specialist Kristin Wood from the Dade Battlefield State Park will lead an informative class on historically consumed wild plants of Florida. This program may require a moderate outdoor hike. No registration is required. Program runs 1.5 hours

Note: Walking sticks hike for June is cancelled while we search for a new Education Specialist. Hikes will resume in July.
