December 1st 5:30 PM           Owl Prowl: It’s the time of year when owls are on the hunt…for each other. Join us for a night time walk to listen and look for barred and great horned owls at Chinsegut. Hike open to all ages. No need to register!

December 2nd 10:00 AM        Archery for Beginners: Ages 10+ are invited to Chinsegut to learn archery. This beginners class includes all equipment for participants and instruction at no cost. Registration in advance is required. Call (352) 754-6722 to sign-up.

December 3rd 10:00 AM         Woodland Elves Photography: This basic photography workshop includes instruction on framing, focus points and depth of field while shooting holiday characters in natural settings. Participants will each receive a holiday woodland character to keep. This program is offered by Green-fly Media. Visit creative-nature-photography.com to register. Fee $20

December 5th 10:00 AM         Microphotography: During this 3-hour workshop participants will be immersed in the history and uses of microscopic viewing equipment then use provided adapters to photograph through microscopes. This program is offered by Green-fly Media. Visit creative-nature-photography.com to register. Fee $30

December 8th 10:00 AM         Florida-friendly and neighbor-friendly; Growing wild in a civilized world: Learn the basic psychology behind what humans feel comfortable with in a landscape and how to incorporate Florida-friendly and native plants into a community-pleasing design. Free class, no need to register.

December 8 – 9th 9:00 AM     Kestrel Box Build: Hobbyist and skilled carpenters please lend us a hand in building nest boxes for the Southeastern American Kestrel monitoring program. We need skilled hands to cut and assemble materials for this year’s chicks. Please email Brendan.Oconnor@MyFWC.com if you can help.

December 13th 5:00 PM         Wednesday Wildlife Walk: While the weather is nice why not enjoy the outdoors with a guided walk to look for wildlife. Never know what you might see on one of these hour-long hikes. Visit areas of the property not often seen by hikers, learn a little about history and ecology along the way. Register by calling (352) 754-6722. Open to all ages.

December 16th 2:00 PM         Children in the WILD; Winter: Children ages 5-9 are invited to Chinsegut to learn about animals in winter weather. Program includes stories, games, crafts or other activities. Register at (352) 754-6722.

December 21st 10:00 AM       First Day of winter hike, the hunt for evergreens: This hike will explore the grounds around Chinsegut as we hunt for some plant of holiday lore. Ages 16+ are invited to join this 3rd annual First Day of Winter Hike. Approximate hike time 1.5 hours.

December 23rd 11:00 AM       Animal Tracking for families: Looking for a quick break from holiday shopping? Stop into Chinsegut to explore the world of animal calling cards and see if you can ID who has been roaming the trails!

December 29th 8:30 AM         Beginning Birding: Join Hernando Audubon volunteers for a guided hike to find the feathered winter residents of Chinsegut. This great program, for all levels of birder includes a hike to Mays Prairie. Guides and binoculars may be borrowed from the Center. No need to register for this free program.

December 31st 8:00 AM         Walking Sticks Hike: This walking club will meets once a month to hike and learn about different Natural Areas in Florida and how FWC manages lands. This 2 mile hike will take place around the main loop of May’s Prairie at Chinsegut. This is a casual paced walk and the Center will provide a walking stick for members to borrow during hikes. Hikes will meet the last Sunday of each month. Limited to 15 hikers, call (352) 754-6722 to register.
