Chinsegut Conservation Center January 2020 Programs

January 1 st 10:00 AM First Day Hike:
This fourth annual hike will take place around the main loop trail of Chinsegut (approximately 2 miles). This will be a briskly paced hike and is open to all participants. The terrain is not ideal for strollers. No need to register just stop in by 10:00 to join and start the new year on the right foot.
Program length 1.5 hours

January 2nd – 3rd 9:00-3:00 Conservation Adventures:
This two-day wildlife exploration program will introduce habitats, wildlife, wildlife identification skills and more. This class is limited to 15 participants by pre-registration. Children must bring water and lunch each day. The cost is 20.00 per child, Ages 9- 13, register at (352) 754-6722.

January 4th 8:30 AM – 4 PM NASP BAI Certification:
If you teach physical education or run programs for an organized Co-op, scouting organization or other organized groups this is an opportunity to become certified as a Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) through the largest standardized archery program offered for school-aged children. Instructors certified at Chinsegut will have access to the use of the center’s NASP equipment for programs for their group (additional requirements apply). The cost is $60.00 per person (ages 18+ only). Register by December 30th at NASPBAI.org

January 11th 8:00 AM Big Pine Birding Hike w/ Audubon:
Join volunteers from Hernando Audubon in exploring the diversity of birdlife at Chinsegut’s Big Pine Tract. This adventure entails a minimum mile-long hike through the picturesque uplands and wetlands at Big Pine. Bring binoculars and bird guides or borrow some from the education center. No need to register. Big Pine is located at 12060 Old Crystal River Rd Brookville.
Program length 2-3 hours

January 11th 9:00 AM 3-D Archery Shoot:
Each month a 3-D archery course is offered at Chinsegut. Join us for this shoot to prepare for the upcoming ASA tournament shoot in February. Course is 15 lanes with 3- D target variety. Sight in your bow on our practice range. A small fee applies to help us continue to maintain our equipment. Call (352) 754-6722 for more information, no registration required. Join
Drawn by Grace for provided lunch following the shoot. Allow 3-4 hours to participate fully.

January 18th, 2:00 PM Children in the Wild; Navigation:
Comfort with navigation is essential for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Bring the kids ages 5-9 to Chinsegut for a special class to explore wilderness navigation. Learn about compasses, maps and participate in some fun activities related to finding your way. Please register online or by calling (352) 754-6722.
Program length 1 hour

January 25 th 9:00 AM Perry Oldenberg Hike:
Once listed as a mitigation park, Perry Oldenberg is now a Wildlife Environmental Area managed alongside Chinsegut. This largely undisturbed pine forested area is home to large numbers of deer turkey, kestrels, and other interesting wildlife. This guided hike will lead you through approximately 1.5 miles of scenic trail. Please call to RSVP and for

January 31 st 8:00 AM Beginning Birding with Audubon:
Take advantage of the weather by joining this guided birding stroll through Chinsegut. Hike begins at the center at 8 AM. Program offered through Hernando Audubon volunteers.
