Chinsegut Conservation Center March 2019 Programs

Chinsegut Conservation Center is open to the public from 8 AM until 2 PM Fridays and Saturdays and other times for scheduled programs or by appointment. Educators and organized groups can book programs year-round based on staff and volunteer availability.

The Center hosts many wildlife education programs and hikes throughout the year. Fun educational programs connect visitors with biologists and wildlife experts to explore and become familiar with Florida’s unique and sensitive natural areas. Located 6 miles north of Brooksville, Chinsegut Conservation Center Tract covers 408 of the 850 acres comprising Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area (WEA). March 2019 programs are below:

Spring Vegetable Gardening

Looking to maintain a productive garden year-round? Seasonal gardening advice provided by the UF/IFAS Hernando Extension office is a good place to start. Learn what seeds to plant now, when to harvest and so much more from this informative class. Free to attend, no registration required. March 1st 10:00 AM Program length: 1 hour

Nature Explorers: Spring Insects, ages 5-9

Outdoors is the place to be this spring. We will conduct a bug hunt and catalog the species we find using Florida Natur e Trackers (among other activities). Download the free iNaturalist App and join our Florida projects to help upload information. This is a free activity, please register to attend, feel free to bring nets and containers, all specimens must be released at end program. Register online or call (352) 754-6722. Wildlife Day

Explore Florida’s wildlife with some unique adventures at Chinsegut. Watch as birds are banded for study, meet a tortoise expert, an owl or two and get face to face with frogs. Nature Photography

Professional photographer and nature lover Alice Herden of Green-fly Media offers a monthly opportunity to learn more about DSLR cameras and getting great shots outdoors. Alice has an amazing nature portfolio and lots of opportunities for photographers of all levels to join her in the field. Registration and a $20.00 fee required. Science Explorers: Archery, ages 10-13

This month our science explorer will take a break from natural science to explore other things to do outdoors. This archery class is free to attend please register, if you have not already joined the Science Explorers by calling (352) 754-6722. March 13th 10:00 AM Program length: 2.5 hours

3-D Archery

Archers should arrive by 9 AM to join us for this shoot to prepare for the upcoming ASA ‘tournament’ shoot in April. Course is 15 lanes with 3-D target variety. Sight in your bow on the range. Small fee applies to help us continue to maintain our equipment. Call (352) 754-6722 for more information, no registration required. Join Drawn by Grace for provided lunch following shoot. Allow 3-4 hours to participate fully. March 16th 9:00AM

Children in the WILD; Sea Turtles

Ages 5-9 are invited to visit Chinsegut to learn about sea turtles. This program includes games and activities as well as a chance to view sea turtle artifacts up close. This is a free program, please register online or by calling (352) 754-6722. March 16th 2:00 PM Program length: 1 hour

Conservation Adventures

This two-day program gives kids an opportunity to learn about wildlife over their school break. Program includes wildlife monitoring technology, exploring signs of wildlife, exploring wetlands, an introduction to bird and butterfly ID and more. This program is for ages 10-13 by pre-registration only. This is a drop-off program. Students must have bagged lunches for both days. Register by calling (352) 754-6722. The fee for the program is $20.00 per participant. March 19 & 20 9-3                                                                            

Tuesday Wildlife Trek

As the sun sets a new shift of wildlife begins in the forest. Join Katie for a guided stroll to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of nature while the weather is nice. Please RSVP at (352) 754-6722. March 19th 5:00 PM Program length: 1.5 hours

Beginning Birding with Audubon

Take advantage of the weather by joining this guided birding stroll through Chinsegut. Hike begins at the center at 8 AM. Program offered through Hernando Audubon volunteers. See song birds, wading birds and maybe even some migrating warblers. March 22nd 8:00AM Program length: up to 3 hours.                       

Birding 101

Get introduce to birding, equipment, guides and amazing resources by attending this program at Chinsegut. This class is for beginners and future birders looking to learn a little more about birds and how to tell them apart. Free program; register online or at (352) 754-6722. March 29th 10:00 AM

Night Hike, Nightjars

Night hawks and Chuck-wills widow birds should be making their return to Chinsegut. All ages are invited to come look and listen for these nifty, night-loving, bug-eating birds. No need to register. March 29th 7:00 PM     

Walking Sticks; Chinsegut main loop

This hike will focus on looking for insects that are found during the spring for comparison of diversity in the fall at the same location. Hike meets at Chinsegut Conservation Center located at 23212 Lake Lindsey Road in Brooksville. Please call (352) 754-6722 to register. Free hike, adults only.
