As I write this report, we are on the cusp of a Tropical Storm that may do a little dance along the Big Bend. From past weather events like this one, I’ve found that the fishing can be very good after the storm when it is safe to head back to the Gulf.

Some things to check before you go; are the ramps open in the town you’re leaving from, are bait shops open, ice, fuel, etc. Heading back out after the storms, be aware that there will be some floating debris from coastal flooding, like logs, that can mess up a lower unit.  Hopefully, none of this will happen but it’s best to be prepared. 

Rain and wind-cooled water will create a good trout bite right after the storm. Three to 5 feet of water is best and work a few different colored soft plastics till you establish a bite.

Redfish will be along the edges of rocky keys and points. If there is a shortage of live bait I will catch pinfish with a small hook and use those as bait either live or cut in chunks. Good bait for pinfish is either Fish Bites or Gulp!.

The shallow rocks will have good action, also with the possibility of keeper grouper being pushed in from the storm. 

The scalloping has been very good in 5 foot of water, just west of the St. Martins Keys. Low tide is best for scalloping. This weekend it will be incoming mid-morning so head out early to scallop and catch a redfish on the way back before the afternoon thunderstorms.
