Meet our Mermaid (Statue) on Friday, Feb. 24 at Anderson Snow Park

Years ago, Tammy Heon, Director of Tourism for Florida’s Adventure Coast, dreamed of a mermaid trail, with artistically decorated statues placed throughout Hernando County, adding beauty and style to the destination.

In the beginning of 2022, the Mermaid Tale Trail project was shared with attendees at the Brooksville Matters meeting, and Diane asked what the cost of a mermaid would be. It was manageable, so she committed NatureCoaster.com to the project.

We were so quick to sign up that we were able to choose a mermaid designed and painted by Jesse Kasabian, a gifted artist who resides in Hernando County. Jesse’s design was for Nico and the Velvet Underwater Band, which spoke to Diane because her husband is a musician.

The Mermaid Tale Trail began, with completion and unveiling scheduled for a few weeks after hurricane Ian slammed our neighbors to the south, so in January of 2023. all 27 mermaids were brought to Weeki Wachee Springs State Park to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the park.

This month, Nico has been moved to her permanent home in Anderson Snow Park as part of the permanent Mermaid Tale Trail, and we would be honored if you could join us for a public unveiling and celebration of NatureCoaster and Jesse Kasabian’s contribution to this wonderful public art project.

We will unveil her, read her story, and then sing, “Under the Sea” to create a video of our ocean-singing sensation, and some stickers, chocolate mermaid tails, and community spirit. It will only take 15 minutes but promises to be fun – and better with you!
