October Canning Classes
The October Canning Class schedule is in!
Sign up as classes fill quickly for some of these.
What you get when you pay for a class:
1) Knowledge! You get to learn how to make a new recipe from scratch. You get to learn how to can that recipe. You get to learn how to utilize that canned product into a meal for you and/or your family.
2) You get a snack or meal, depending on what the class is! This is so you can taste what you made and to get one idea of how to use use that jar.
3) You get to meet new people and make new friends! Lots of people have made new and lasting friendships from our classes.
4) By purchasing a class, you are also supporting the Cannery! Every class helps keep our doors open by helping us pay our bills. We are a non-profit Organization and rely on donations, classes, grants, Cannery store purchases and Volunteers to keep us up and running.
5) You get to shop in our Cannery store and check out what local small businesses have to offer while waiting for your jars to process. Every purchase helps a local small business and helps support the Cannery!
6) You always go home with 1 jar of what you made that day, a recipe to make it again on your own and the hands on experience!
October Introduction to Canning 4 Week Series
This is a four-week hands-on preservation course that involves both water bath and pressure canning. The course will focus on safe canning practices including sterilization, how to properly fill jars, how to ensure a proper seal, and how to process using both methods.
Everyone will go home each week with a jar of what is made in class. We also always taste what is made so you have an idea of what to expect.
Please bring a small box to transport your jar home in.
Week 1 – Water Bath Canning – Chow Chow
Sunday October 2, 2022 3 pm to 6 pm
In this recipe you will learn how to make and can this old Southern favorite. Chow Chow relish is a great topping for hot dogs, burgers, turkey sandwiches, all kinds of great things
Week 2 – Water Bath Canning – Applesauce!
Sunday October 9, 2022 3 pm to 6 pm
In this class we will be learning to make applesauce! The best thing about homemade applesauce is you can control the added sugars.
Week 3 – Pressure Canning Vegetables – Herbed Potatoes
Sunday October 16, 2022 3 pm to 6 pm
This class we will be pressure canning in season Vegetables. We will discuss how the vegetables you use will determine the time needed for processing. You will learn how to choose your herbs to can Herbed Potatoes.
Week 4 – Pressure Canning Recipes – Chicken and Gravy in a Jar
Sunday October 23, 2022 3 pm to 6 pm
In the final class for the course we will make Chicken and Gravy in a Jar. Nice and easy meal in a jar that you can just heat and eat!!
All classes are non-refundable.

Bourbon Chicken
Date: Saturday October 1, 2022

Description: Bourbon Chicken is juicy, tender chicken cut into pieces simmered in a sweet, brown sugar glaze that will melt in your mouth. Rich in flavor and served over rice for a complete meal! In this class you will learn how to prepare and can bourbon chicken.

Carrot Cake Jam

Hungarian Goulash

Description: In this class you will learn how to make Hungarian Goulash is a delicious beef stew (or soup) with a rich paprika seasoned broth.
- Serve this over homemade noodles (or add potatoes) or with a side of bread or Biscuits to sop up any of the broth left in your bowl.

Summer Solstice Preserves

Description: In this class you will learn how to prepare this delicious Jam! Deeply robust in flavour, this luscious preserve is too good to limit to a spread for bread. Serve it over or layered into cake or other sweets. Just like the solstice, these marvelous small fruits have short seasons.
