Royal Dalton House assists Citrus Blessings and Staff gets Dementia Certified

Royal Dalton House has been assisting Citrus Blessings in their food ministry. According to Alyson Truong, Life Enrichment Director at Royal Dalton House, “Whenever Citrus Blessings needs help with a packaging job, I volunteer my time.”

Last week Alyson and Royal Dalton House provided the new Royal Dalton House bus and helped move already packaged bags of food from their main office in Lecanto to the Citrus chamber office in Crystal River. “I brought the RDH bus over and we accommodated 720 bags on the bus,” said Alyson. Royal Dalton House will also be a host pantry site for Citrus Blessings beginning the coming school year where Alyson and RDH residents will pack bags of food weekly.

Royal Dalton House Staff Receives Dementia Care Training

Staff of the Royal Dalton House recently received a two-hour dementia care training seminar from Gary Joseph LeBlanc of Common Sense Caregiving. Mr. LeBlanc is a well-known certified dementia care specialist in the Tampa Bay area. He has provided seminars to a wide range of medical personnel and caregivers in the Bay area.

“I believe that the true way to educate the family and professional caregivers is through the heart,” said Mr. LeBlanc. “My seminars and training classes are full of personal and professional dramaturgy scenarios of my 20-year personal and professional experience in dementia care.” The two-hour training class covers a wide range of issues including, but not limited to:

  • The true definition of dementia and why it takes place.
  • An understanding of the various forms of dementia from Lewy Body dementia, frontotemporal degeneration, vascular dementia, mixed dementia, Korsakoff syndrome, early onset dementia, traumatic brain injury and more.

Mr. LeBlanc emphasized that there are two patients involved: the person living with dementia and his or her caregiver. A wide range of other issues are discussed such as sundown syndrome and shadowing, bathing issues, wandering, elopement and triggers to watch for, eating dilemmas, communication tips, dealing with challenging behaviors and resolutions and learning how to assess the behaviors and ways to respond.

Each member of the staff received a certificate of attendance and a purple angel lapel pin commemorating the completion of the program, and the Royal Dalton House received an official plaque recognizing that the “Royal Dalton House has gone above and beyond the State of Florida requirements to provide their staff extended training on dementia care.” Administrators receive 3.5 continuing education credits from the NAB (National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards).
