Saint Leo University rolled out the welcome mat today (July 17) for nearly 1,000 guests—new and prospective students and their families—at its admissions event, Super Saturday.

Saint Leo University Hosts In-Person ‘Super Saturday’ Event for Incoming, Prospective Students

The university community was excited to be able to meet—in person—students who will begin studying at Saint Leo’s residential campus in Fall Semester 2021. Each college provided a taste of what is to come for students who are enrolling in the more than 60 degree programs the university offers.

Dr. Kathleen Van Eerden, dean of the university’s new College of Health Professions, led incoming students in an “ice-breaker” activity in which students illustrated what health equity looks like to them, while students entering the Tapia College of Business degree programs created their own $100 startup business.

Faculty members Drs. Helen MacLennan, Keith Jones, Kelly Atkins, and Lionel Thomas led the exercise in which the students completed a simple, one-page business plan. “They had to consider who would buy their product or service, how they would market it, and how their business might help others,” MacLennan said.

Saint Leo’s College of Arts and Sciences showcased its programs with activities in the Greenfelder-Denlinger Boardrooms. The students, who will begin classes on August 31, received a dose of science thanks to physics and chemistry demonstrations and by examining “very cool specimens” and engaging in biology lab activities with faculty members, said Dean Heather R. Parker. A fast-paced trivia contest introduced students to history, politics and law while a psychology station allowed students to solve psych puzzles. The religion, philosophy, language, and arts programs also hosted quiz activities for the incoming and prospective students.

Those enrolling in the College of Education and Social Services took part in “Wheel of Careers,” a game in which faculty members posed questions to the students about criminal justice, education, and social work with prizes awarded to the winners and participants. Dr. Holly Atkins, chair of the undergraduate education program, demonstrated the university’s avatar simulation system used not only in education, but also in many other degree programs.

Super Saturday also provided opportunities for parents and family members to meet with university leaders during a question-and-answer session.

Students were able to get a jumpstart on the fall by registering for classes, housing, and parking, attending financial aid sessions, and more.

Saint Leo will welcome new students on Saturday, August 28, when they move to University Campus, 33701 State Road 52, St. Leo, FL. Classes begin on Tuesday, August 31.
