Quilts Wanted for Display in Floral City

By Marcia Beasley Posted on November 6, 2023

Wanted: antique and vintage quilts for a one-day exhibit in two of Floral City’s historic homes during
Saturday, December 2 as part of Floral City Heritage Days 2023. The Duval Preservation Trust, Inc. has planned a fund-raising event to keep moving forward with the preservation and operation of the oldest house in Citrus County.

The Quilt Exhibit will be held on Saturday, 2 December from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Historic W.C. Zimmerman House and the Historic Duval-Metz House with demonstrations in the Metz Cottage. Tickets are $10.00 if purchased before Dec. 2, and $15.00 at the event.

These historic buildings are located across the street from each other, at the corner of Orange Avenue and Old Floral City Road. The Historic Zimmerman house has recently been rehabilitated with beautifully
restored wooden floors and beadboard walls, presenting an exceptional background for antique and
vintage quilts.

What is needed is the donation of quilts loaned from the public for the Exhibit.

Antique and Vintage Quilts Needed for Floral City Display Dec. 2

This is an opportunity for you to share your antique and vintage quilts – those rare gems usually stashed
away in the closet or cedar chest and seldom seen. If you have a quilt made between 1920 and 1950, it is
considered to be “vintage.” If the quilt was made before 1920, it is considered to be “antique.” If you are
not sure of the year it was made, call us and we will advise you.

If you can loan your Quilts, please register them by Monday, November 27 by calling (352)
341-0063 or emailing readinlady@ix.netcom.com

This ticket includes a guided tour of the Historic Duval-Metz House built c.1863 and considered to be the
oldest residence in Citrus County. The Duval-Metz House has recently received the donation of a large quantity of household items and farm implements from the period, and many of these can be viewed on the tour.

Although there will not be a guided tour of the Historic W.C. Zimmerman house, each visitor will be able to view the impressive, unfurnished interior of this home built c. 1890-1900. This house was built for Citrus County’s first Clerk of the Court for whom it is named. Clerk Zimmerman has gone down in Citrus County history as a key figure in the 1891 “Stealing of the County Seat.” One may ask about it at the Quilt Exhibit.

Advance tickets may be purchased at the following contact locations: Citrus County Chamber of Commerce in Crystal River and Inverness; Surfaces Flooring at 8698 W. Dixieland St across US 19 from Fat Daddy’s in Homosassa Springs; Mike Bays State Farm Insurance office at 3909 N Lecanto Hwy in Beverly Hills; the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum Store at 1 Courthouse Square, Inverness, Tuesday through Saturday; the Floral City Heritage Museum in the Town Center Fridays and Saturdays, and the Red Brick Place at the traffic light in Floral City, Wednesday through Saturday.
